League Cup 1st Round Second Leg

August 15th 1978
Exeter City 1 Bournemouth 1.

The City are through to the second round of the League Cup competition for the third successive season, going through on a 2-1 aggregate after drawing the second leg at St James's Park. But it was not a good team performance by Exeter and Bournemouth can count themselves unlucky to be out of the Cup. In this match the City lacked the necessary build-up as a collective body to produce the kind of soccer that rocked their opponents at the start of last season, and apart from the goal they scored they created very little else to really worry Bournemouth.

Bournemouth went ahead in the 41st minute when K.Brown scored. Delve, with a superb glancing header, equalised just after the interval from a beautifully placed centre by Kellow.

And the City were kept in the game and in the competition by Roberts and Hore with goal-line clearances, and by the fact that a shot that beat O'Keefe was kept out by the goalpost.

Exeter City:- O'Keefe; Templeman, Giles, Roberts, Hore; Hodge, Bowker, Randell; Delve, Kellow, Hatch.

Referee:- Mr D.J.Biddle of Bristol.
