CHESTERFIELD v EXETER CITY
September 9th 1978
A goal in the 30th minute by Kellow, the player that Chesterfield tried to sign during the close season, put Exeter well on the way to victory at the Recreation Ground. In the second half the home side attacked with desperation more than soccer skill, and the crowd of 3,328 spectators, saw justice done with the result: Chesterfield 0 Exeter City 1.
The game started at a gentle pace with both teams trying to find the respective weaknesses of their opponents. Exeter were the first to mount a dangerous attack with a free-kick by Roberts which Letheren held comfortably. When Chesterfield retaliated a free-kick by Walker was turned away for a corner, which was cleared. After ten minutes
a hot attack by Chesterfield ended with Salman shooting hard against the crossbar from 15 yards. Letheren saved well from Templeman and Kellow, but after half an hour, with the home defence in a general mix-up following a corner Kellow, on all fours in the goal-mouth, steered the ball into the net with his head. Exeter in the second half were subjected to more pressure but the defence held out well.
Chesterfield:- Letheren; Tartt, Hunter, Cottam, Burton; Cammack, Simpson, O'Neill; Kowalski, Salmans, Walker.
Exeter City: O'Keefe; Templeman, Giles, Roberts, Hore; Hodge, Randell, Delve; Bowker, Kellow, Hatch.
Referee:- Mr R.Kirkpatrick of Leicester.

Exeter City Reserves v Keynsham
An excellent game of football was seen at St James's Park between Exeter City Reserves and the newly promoted Keynsham team. The City had the better of the first half but failed to score until shortly before the interval when a move on the right wing between Holman and Ireland was finished off in style by White, who swept the ball into the net well out of the reach of the goalkeeper. Keynsham almost got an equaliser when Gallop cracked a swerving shot against the Exeter crossbar.
Result City Res 1 Keynsham 0.
