Match 11
27th September 1978
Colchester United ( Home)

Exeter City v Colchester

September 27 1978

Exeter City 2 Colchester 1.

Two more points as the result of the victory over Colchester are now safely gathered in, and as long as the City can produce results of this nature their supporters need have no fears about them falling back into the relegation zone. The lead was gained by Exeter after only five minutes, and it came from a penalty taken by Kellow for a foul on himself by Dowman. Slackness in defence allowed Colchester to equalise through Gough, but the goal of the match was Exeter's winning one in the 75th minute, when one of Holman's surging dribbles up the left wing resulted in a low cross into the penalty area being whipped into the net by Bowker, who is one player in the City team with the knack of being in the right place at the right time.

Colchester's team included Bobby Hodge, who was transferred to them last week, but closely marked by Hatch he found little opportunity of indulging in any of those raking runs up the wing that used to delight the Exeter fans. The attendance was 3,421.
