Match 17

Bury (home)

City v Bury
October 21st 1978

Following upon the heels of Blackburn, Bolton Wanderers, and Blackpool, Bury are the latest of the Lancashire "B" teams to take on the Grecians at St James's Park, and just like the others, the "Shakers" failed to shake Exeter, and were forced to return to their Northern stronghold with no luck and no points. Bury were beaten by 2 goals to 1, so the score now is Exeter 4 Lancashire 0.

Exeter City:- O'Keefe; Templeman, Giles, Roberts, Hore; Delve, Randell, Hatch; Neville, Kellow, Bowker.

Bury:- Forrest; Ritson, Tucker, Lugg, Kennedy; Stanton, Hamstead, Taylor; Wilson, Beamish, Gregory.

Referee:- Mr D.J.Biddle of Bristol. Linesmen:- Messrs J.M.Carter and D.R.Palmer.

By their victory Exeter extended their unbeaten home run of games to six, although their latest success was not easily achieved. The City played better in the first half, when their goals were obtained, than they did afterwards, and it was in this latter period that Bury got their goal, and with a bit of luck could have landed one or two more. Kellow with a grand header opened the scoring in the 17th minute and when a quarter of an hour later an explosive shot by Kellow rattled the crossbar Bowker was on hand to head home the rebound. It was as well for Exeter that these goals had been scored, because after the interval Hore had a torrid time against the speedy Wilson, and Giles found the bustling Beamish equally hard to handle.
