Colchester v City
Friday February 2nd 1979
Mr Godfrey, Exeter City's new manager, whose tour of duty officially commenced on the Monday following the match with Oxford United, was prevented from seeing the City team in action as as he would no doubt have wished to, as the continuation of quickly as arctic conditions in the North of England caused the postponement of last Saturday's Third Division fixture between Exeter and Hull at the Boothferry Park, on Humberside.
But on Friday evening, under the floodlights at Layer Road, he should have been greatly satisfied with his first glimpse of his new charges when they drew, and so easily could have won their match against the United. Result:- Colchester 2 Exeter City 2.
Colchester:- Walker; Cook, Wignall, Dowman, Wright; Hodge, Dyer, Lee; Foley, Gough, Allinson.
Exeter City:- O'Keefe; Templeman, Giles, Roberts, Hore; Delve, Randell, Hatch; Neville, Sims, Pearson.
After the home side had gone ahead by two goals (one a penalty given against Hore for tripping Cook) from Allinson and Gough, Exeter hit back hard and two goals in a minute by Neville earned them a point. Colchester were fortunate to escape with a division of the points, for Cook twice cleared off the goal-line from Delve with the goalkeeper beaten, and the penalty award, which was disputed by the Exeter men, was a very harsh decision.
