Exeter City v Swansea City
February 24th 1979
Exeter City 2 Swansea City 1 at St James's Park.
There was no Nottingham Forest or Trevor Francis at the Exeter ground, but the City's top of the table clash with star-studded Swansea proved to be every bit as entertaining as Monday night's testimonial game for Nick Jennings.
City: O'Keefe; Templeman, Roberts, Hatch, Hore; Delve, Randell, Forbes; Neville, Sims, Pearson.
Swansea: Crudgington; Evans, Smith, Stevenson, Bartley; R.James, Charles, Toshack; Phillips, Curtis, Callaghan.
Referee:- Mr B.T.Stevens of Stonehouse. Linesmen: Messrs B.J.Marshall and R.Rimmer.
The Programme
A crowd of 7,697, easily Exeter's biggest for a League game, saw the City produce promotion winning form in a pulsating first half during which Delve put them in front with a vital goal after 15 minutes. John Sims delivered the killer blow with a fine header in the last ten minutes, and when it was too late for Swansea to save the game Curtis scored for them from a headed pass by Toshack.
- Watford (40 points),
- Shrewsbury (39),
- Gillingham (33),
- Exeter City, Swansea, and Swindon (all 32) now lead the Third Division table.
