City v Watford

March 10th 1979

Exeter City have slipped behind in the promotion race, but in this match, watched by a crowd of 7,082, held Watford, the runaway leaders, to a draw on a heavy ground at St James's Park. Exeter were by no means outclassed, and in fact could count themselves a trifle unlucky not to have won. When Neville was brought down by Pritchett the free kick, taken by Hatch, rattled the Watford crossbar, and this was about the nearest either side came to scoring as they battled it out on the muddy field in pouring rain.

City: O'Keefe; Templeman, Giles, Roberts, Hore; Delve, Randell, Hatch; Neville, Sims, Pearson.

Watford:- Rankin; Stirk, Booth, Sims, Pritchett; Joslyn, Bolton, Downes; Pollard, Mercer, Jenkins.

The Programme

  • Exeter City have signed Phil Roberts, the Welsh International full back from Hereford United, who joined Bristol Rovers as a youth team player ten years ago, remaining at Eastville for four seasons during which he appeared nearly 200 times in League matches, then moving to Portsmouth, for whom he played 152 games in the League. During his time as a Portsmouth player Roberts played four times for the Welsh international eleven including the match against England at Cardiff in the 1973-74 season.
  • The City have also signed Ian Main, reserve team goalkeeper, on professional forms.
