Match 41
24th March 1979
Sheffield Wednesday (Home)
City v Sheffield
March 24th 1979
Exeter City 2 Sheffield Wednesday 2.
The pitch was perfect for football at St James's Park, but the blustery wind made things difficult for the players. Exeter once again dropped a point through failing to last the pace, and there was less than a minute left for play when they got into a defensive mix-up following a corner, and Hornsby nipped in to score Sheffield's second equaliser.
Exeter City:- O'Keefe; Templeman, Giles, Roberts, Hore; Forbes, Bowker, Hatch; Neville, Sims, Pearson.
Wednesday:- Turner; Shirtliff, Pickering, Smith, Grant; Porterfield, Mullen, Wylde; Lowey, Johnson, Hornsby.
- Welton Rovers scored an easy win against the City Reserves on their new ground at Midsomer Norton by four goals to nil. Exeter gave a trial to Geoffrey Gay, a centre-forward, who has been with Bolton Wanderers Reserves, but he did little of note. By far the best man in the City team was Roberts, the new defender from Hereford.
- Peter Rogers, a 25 year-old forward from Bath City, has been signed by Exeter City, and it is possible that he will be given a chance to show what he can do in the first eleven at Mansfield on Monday night.
