Match 52
5th May 1979
Rotherham United (Away)
And in the Western League
City Reserves v Welton Rovers
Rotherham v Exeter City
May 5th Exeter City's last lingering hopes of promotion disappeared at the Millmoor Stadium when they were beaten by Rotherham United. There was a sparse crowd of below three thousand round the railings and in the grandstand to witness a moderate display by both teams in what was a typical end-of-season game. Exeter were a goal down after 22 minutes and two down after 48. They pushed forward in the second half in search of a goal, but achieved nothing until four minutes from the end when the ball travelled from Randell to Neville and then to Bowker, who put it in the net with a shot from five yards.
Rotherham 2 Exeter City 1.
Rotherham:- McAlister; Forrest, Rhodes, Stancliffe, Breckin; Young, Green, Smith; Phillips, Gwyther, Carr.
City: Main; Templeman, Giles, Mitchell, Hore; Delve, Randell, Hatch; Neville, Sims, Rogers.
Bowker came on as the "sub" for Hatch after 73 minutes.
