Slackness in the City defence practically gave Gillingham two goals in the first half, Price scoring after 52 seconds and Funnell after 17 minutes.
Exeter came to life in the second half and controlled the game, with Randell, Delve, and Hatch outstanding both in defence and attack, but despite their superiority the City could not get the ball into their opponents' net and consequently had to settle for a 2-0 defeat. Sims had to retire with a knee injury after 37 minutes and was replaced by Ireland for the remainder of the game.
