Match 51
23rd April 1976
Scunthorpe (home)
Exeter 5-4 Scunthorpe
23rd April 1976
The last match of the season, and with nothing at stake for either club, Exeter City and Scunthorpe United contrived to serve up a nine goal thriller. Sadly the majority of City supporters decided to stay away as the lowest crowd of the season - 1,863 were treated to an excellent attacking game of football. City eventually won an absorbing contest 5- 4, with Alan Beer bagging a hat-trick, and Lammie Robertson and John Wingate adding a goal apiece. For Scunthorpe, John Woodward netted twice, and Rick Green and Clive Wigginton scored one each. The Grecians ended the season in seventh spot in the Fourth Division, whilst Scunthorpe were in eighteenth position. The visitors included debutant winger Alan Dale for what must have been a memorable game for him!
