Match 16
30th October 1976
Southport (Home)
SATURDAY 30th OCTOBER 1976
LAMMIE ENDS GOAL DROUGHT WITH THREE OF HIS OWN
Fourth Division
Exeter City 3 Southport 1
Exeter City team: Key, Hore, Hooker, Morrin, Darke, Hatch, Weeks, Kellow, Robertson, Holman, Jennings.
Southport team: Coates, Sibbald, O'Brien, O'Neil, Higham, Taylor, Dewsnip, Lyon, Galley, (Snookes), Wilson, Blair.
Scorers: Exeter: Robertson (3). Southport: Wilson.
It was the first time that Lammie Robertson had scored a hat-trick in his ten-year career, and it also ended a four match goalless run for Exeter City. It was a match that had plenty of excitement, incident and entertainment. Yet for just over an hour you wondered if the Grecians were ever going to score again.
City dominated the match from the word go, but a combination of missed chances and a superb display from Southport goalkeeper John Coates, simply held them up. Southport went ahead completely against the run of play in the 27th minute when Alan Wilson netted with a fine near post header.
City had to wait until the 62nd minute before breaking their recent goal drought and equalising from the penalty spot. Tony Kellow was brought down in the area and Robertson stroked home the resultant spot kick. Six minutes later Robertson rose superbly to head a goal from Nicky Jennings corner. They then made victory certain in the 82nd minute when Harry Holman was brought down on one of his many direct and impressive runs into the box. Robertson again netted with the penalty to complete his hat-trick.
