Exeter City Women pick up deserved win on the road.

Exeter City Women picked up a 4-1 win over Brislington Ladies away from home in the Women's National League Division One South West.

Goals from Hope Suominen, Abbie Britton, and two from Georgie Barbour-Gresham proved the difference in a match where City picked up a deserved win as they continued their strong start to the season.

A dominant first half performance saw City come out of the traps early and created three opportunities for Britton, but the Brislington keeper was equal to all of them.

The first goal of the game came on 20 minutes when City took a deserved lead as Britton played an excellent pass out to the feet of Suominen, who then beat her marker with some quick feet before slotting home into the top corner.

But despite City’s dominance, the second goal of the game came from the home side as they counter-attacked before a 25-yard strike on goal found its way past Rhiannon Dumper in goal.

Just moments before the break, City were back in front as Kat Mundy worked the ball well with Suominen before the ball found its way to Britton, whose half volley restored the lead giving the away side the advantage going into the break.



City had to wait until the hour mark to notch their third of the afternoon as they took the game away from Brislington when Mundy and Daniella Tyson worked it well down the right before finding Britton, who cut the ball back into the path of Barbour-Gresham to tuck home from close range.

City were made to work to keep their two-goal cushion intact as Brislington battled hard and made it difficult for the away side to pass the ball, and Dumper was called upon on more than one occasion.

But as the 80th minute came, City managed to find their fourth when the impressive Barbour-Gresham netted her second with an effort from 25-yards as she sent a dipping effort goalwards, as Clive Watts and his coaching team took the points.

Following the match, first team coach Aaron Wakley said: “It was a tough away day performance. Brislington are a difficult team and their position in the table doesn’t give them justice, they’ve played all the top 5 teams. They’ll cause teams problems this season, they are physical and quick on the counter-attack.

“I was really pleased with how well we controlled the midfield and dictated the play, and I was impressed with how our front three created chances for each other. It’s always nice to win away from home.”
