Sunday 30th January 2005

Pat Sowden Trophy 2nd Round
Bristol United 1 Exeter City Ladies 5

Knowing that this game could be a potential banana skin, City were determined to be totally focussed from the start, and they began the match very strongly, hitting the crossbar in the very first minute. It didn't take long for them to break the deadlock though, scoring the first goal after just 3 minutes. A neat through ball from Rachel Edwards found Jo Goldsworthy on a great run, and she blasted the ball past the keeper with style. City continued to press and minutes later they increased their lead. Stacey Pearson putting in a perfect cross for Goldsworthy, who netted with a sublime volley into the top corner.

City's domination continued and Goldsworthy completed a first half hat-trick in just 17 minutes, following a 25 yard run which ended with her rounding the keeper with ease. Still City did not let up and came close to increasing the lead on several occasions, with defender Chrissy Withews and winger Sally Ames both unlucky not to score. Bristol managed to get a goal back with a counter attack shortly before half time, when City were caught napping.

In the second half though City again started to dominate from the whistle and were soon rewarded with a further goal. A fine 20 yard run from Rachel Edwards, saw her go past her marker and strike a powerful low drive to increase City's lead. Goldsworthy then scored the fifth, and her fourth of the day. Latching on to a neat through ball from Kellie Hall, Goldsworthy ran at the keeper and sent her diving the wrong way before placing the ball neatly into the back of the net. City still had several chances to increase the lead further, with Edwards, Goldsworthy and Emma Redwood all going close.

City Manager Steve Mclear said: "We always knew this game could be a potential banana skin, so told my players that we had to go out with full concentration and we did just that.

'We had a great start to the game, hitting the crossbar and netting some fine goals. We played some neat passing football, supporting each other all over the pitch and we looked great on the ball. 'After the third goal, think we sat back a little and let Bristol get a goal back. In the second half again we came out and started well, with some fine play and finishing. The second half wasn't quite as good as the first, we sat back thinking our job was done when we could have further increased our lead.

'However, as a whole I'm very impressed with the team's performance, they went out and worked hard and produced some great chances and cool finishes. It was great to see a comeback of our striker Emma Redwood, who's now back after a short break. She came on, and put in a fine performance and was unlucky not to get on the score sheet after going close."
