Exeter City entertained Colchester United at St James Park on the 22nd December 1973 seeking to end a depressing run of five consecutive defeats in the Fourth Division. The Gracians included two players making their home debuts, Peter Hatch and Keith Bowker, who had been signed from Oxford United and Birmingham City respectively. The duo had made their first appearance for the City a week earlier in a 3-1 defeat at Workington.
