What the papers say

MANSFIELD CHRONICLE ADVERTISER

Up to the 70th minute the Stags had given little hope to their faithful fans, for they appeared to have nothing to offer against the skill and determination of the Devon side, depleted by the absence of their top marksman, the injured Fred Binney who nine days earlier had deprived Mansfield of their first away win in 31 games.

Binney's presence hardly seemed necessary when John Wingate slammed in City's third goal in the 65th minute with Mansfield looking a very dejected side indeed. Stags could consider themselves fortunate go to in at half time only two goals in arrears. Andy Bowker missed a real sitter after only five minutes before he finally put the finishing touch to a Graham Parker-Tony Morrin move to break the deadline after 28 minutes.

And to round off an unhappy half Frank Burrows was far too leisurely in dealing with a back pass and allowed Parker to skip through to score City's second with three minutes to run to the half-time whistle.
