Mudd played for Exeter City in the Plymouth and District League before the club turned professional in 1908. Like several players of the time he was in the army and stationed locally. 

Stationed at Topsham Barracks, he made his debut at Torpoint on 21 September 1907 and, playing mainly as a half-back but on occasions in the forward line, he appeared in twenty league games during 1907/08.

In common with nearly all of his teammates he did not join the paid ranks when City turned professional in 1908.
