Grecians come from behind to beat Robins
Exeter City Ladies kept their slim title aspirations alive by defeating league leaders Swindon Town 3-1 in Exminster.
However it was the visitors that struck first as a deep free-kick was struck straight, and the Robins were quickest to react as a volley put Town into an early lead.
However a good response from Exeter saw the scores levelled just after the quarter-hour mark – Kirsty Caunter came out of a midfield contest with the ball, slipped in Tash Knapman, who squared for Vicky Barter to slide in at the far post.
And after soaking up some second-half pressure, the Grecians went ahead for the first time on the hour when Knapman’s corner was flicked on at the near post by Catherine Wright and fell kindly to Courtney Butt to poke in her first goal of the season.
Victory was sealed six minutes from time when Lola Garcia Sanchez flicked a long-ball onto Knapman, who outstripped her marked and coolly slotted in a left-footed strike.
While their league title fate is not in their own hands – as Forest Green Rovers can claim the championship with victories in their final two games – it at least keeps hopes alive. Anything other than victory for Exeter would have put Swindon out of reach.
