Biographical Text

Jimmy Mitton, brother of Jack who was leaving the club just as Jimmy was arriving, played around 70 league games for Exeter City between 1921 and 1923. He joined the club from Stockport County and later played for Nelson.

Jimmy began his professional career with Glossop in 1909 and then moved to Darwen in the Lancashire Combination before signing for Stockport County where he made 88 Football League appearances scoring 6 goals. Returning to Stockport after the Great War, he joined Exeter City before the start of the 1921/22 season. 

Arriving shortly after his brother Jack’s departure to Sunderland, Jimmy made his debut against Charlton Athletic on 27 August 1921 and totalled 40 league appearances during his first term followed by 32 in 1922/23 with a single league goal in each season. 

Returning to Lancashire, Jimmy signed for Nelson in 1923 but didn’t feature in the first-team before retiring from professional football during the following summer. 

Jimmy died in 1949
