Biographical Text

James Mitton, brother of John who was leaving the club just as James was arriving, played around 70 league games for Exeter City between 1921 and 1923. He joined the club from Stockport County and later played for Nelson.

He began his professional career with Glossop in 1909. He then moved to Darwen in the Lancashire Combination, with whom he spent one season. At the close of the 1911 he signed for Stockport County where he made his league debut, going on to feature in 88 games, scoring 6 goals. His stay at Stockport was interrupted by the First World War, and he eventually left the club for Exeter City shortly before the start of the 1921-22 season.

Arriving shortly after his brother's departure to Sunderland, he made his debut against Charlton Athletic on 27 August 1921 and stayed with the Grecians for three seasons before returning to his native Lancashire with Nelson. However, he failed to make an appearance during his one season with the Seedhill club, and retired from professional football in the summer of 1924.

James died in 1949
