COOPS AND SCOTTY END DISMAL RUN

EXETER CITY 2 LEYTON ORIENT 0

City ended their dismal run of five consecutive defeats with a stylish victory against ninth placed Orient. Two super first half goals from Mark Cooper and Scott Hiley sank the men from East London.

City made Orient look ordinary and with a surer touch in front of goal, especially in the second half, could have notched up a six goal victory. Murray Jones returned to centre-forward in place of the injured Trevor Morgan. Richard Dryden missed an early close rnge heading opportunity following a Mark Cooper corner but Orient did make most of the early running as City attempted to shake off the Cambridge hangover.

After Greg Berry was twarted twice City moved ahead after 29 minutes. Hiley sprung the offside trap with a pass to Gary Marshall on the right, he got to the by line before slotting a perfect pass for Cooper to finish with precision and notch his 5th goal of the season.

Just eight minutes later the lead was doubled. A Cooper corner from the right was partially cleared to Hiley lurking on the left hand side just outside the penalty box. His instantly hit low drive scorched into the far corner of the net.

With the benefit of the wind after the break City continued to move forward and Marshall instantly missed a great chance when he over-ran the ball after Steve Neville gave him the opportunity.

Cooper, Dryden and Jones all missed clear chances to add to the lead within a five minutes spell midway through the half. Marshall clipped the top of the bar with a dipping 25 yarder and with just 5 minutes remaining Hiley rocketed another effort just over the top after a run that covered half of the pitch.

A good performance by City then with Kevin Miller having a quiet time in goal, the entire back four of Hiley, Jon Brown, Jim McNichol and Shaun Taylor all performing admirably to form a rock-like base. Cooper, Gordon Hobson and Dryden played steadily in midfield. Up front Marshall, Jones and Neville posed Orient many problems but a goal from them proved elusive.
