Match 46
29th March 1991
Wigan Athletic (home)
AFTER THE LORD MAYOR'S SHOW!
Exeter City 1 Wigan Athletic 0
The Lancashire hat-trick was notched up inasomewhat disappointing match against physical opponents who never realy looked like scoring Both pairs of central defenders had outstanding matches, Shaun Taylor and Richard Dryden for City and Peter Atherton and Alan Johnson for Wigan. Taylor scored the only goal of the match after 19 minutes when he powerfully headed home a Mark Cooper corner from the right
Wigan battled hard too hard at times with Daley, Appleton and Powell earning bookings and Kevin Langley being sent off for a crude forearm smash on Cooper in the 52nd minute. Despite the one man advantage City never really looked in the form shown against Bolton and new loan signing Darren Boughey from Stoke City was not given much opportunity to shine. Cooper did hit the post four minutes from the end but most of the crowd were glad to pocket the three points and go home.
