Match 33
5th February 1991
AFC Bournemouth (a)
BOURNEMOUTH 2 EXETER CITY 1
GOOD START, SHAME ABOUT THE REST
City started in perfect manner at Dean Court. Former Bournemouth player Trevor Morgan scoring after just 40 seconds. Promotion chasing Cherries equalised through Welsh International Andy Jones after 24 minutes. The City goal started with the impressive Scott Hiley, his long pass ran through to Murray Jones and the recent arrival drew the defence before squaring for Morgan to apply the final touch from close range. Morgan continued to have his best spell since he rejoined Exeter with two further good efforts. However, in their first worthwhile attack Bournemouth equalised through Jones after he latched on to a good through pass by Sean Brooks.
Terry Cooper was pleased with the state of affairs at half-time but he must have wished the scoreline reflected City's superiority - 3-1 would have been about right. Unfortunately, as seems to be the current trend City fell away badly. Alex Watson headed against the bar, Jones had several worthy efforts and Luther Blissett showed his considerable class. Peter Cawley, looking surprisingly out of his usual cool, classy form, was twice involved in mix ups with Miller. Blissett missed the first gift opportunity but not the second when he put the home side ahead with 15 minutes remaining.
Terry Cooper's after match comment "We were like a bunch of fairies!".
