What the Papers Say

League leaders Albion made it five straight home victories with goals in the 42nd and 89th minutes of this match at the Hawthorns in front of a 14,676 crowd.

The margin would have been greater but for a great display by City 'keeper Kevin Miller who denied Gary Robson, twice and Craig Shakespeare before being beaten by lan Hamilton's near post header. Exeter looked a more potent force in the second half and substitute Steve Williams had his 20-yard effort well saved by Stuart Naylor and Eamonn Dolan headed just wide before Bernard NcNally lashed the ball home from close range in the closing minutes to make the game safe for Albion.

Hamilton cheers Ardiles

Well-Taken goals from lan Hamilton and Bernard McNally got Ossie Ardiles' West Brom back to winning ways. Hamilton, the first signing made by the Argentinian when he took over at Albion, was on target in those confidence crushing seconds before the interval. Paul Raven floated over a perfect right-wing cross, and Hamilton dived to power home a marvellous header that the diving Kevin Miller could only help into the back of the net Then, with only a minute of the game remaining, the hard working McNally settled the issue, slotting home a low, angled shot into the far corner of the net from a pass from Gary Robson. West Brom dictated play, and in a totally one-sided first half they broke down the Exeter defence time and time again with their fast, penetrating football. But Robson was guilty of a string of shocking misses in front of the target. He fired one close-rang effort into the side netting and then had another shot smothered by Miller when he was totally unmarked. In the 25th minute, Robson was in a one-on-one situation, but he allowed Miller to race off his line to dive and deflect his shot wide. Albion shrugged off the mem ory of their defeat at Stoke last weekend to stay top of Division Two. They certainly look a good bet for promotion.
