PHILIP KNOWLES WATCHES
CITY v BRENTFORD

Exeter City 1 (Moran)
Brentford 2 (Gayle, Blissett)

Brentford went ahead after just three minutes when poor marking from a throw in, combined with a Steve Williams back pass that struck the post, allowed Marcus Gayle to score a simple goal. The lead was nearly doubled on ten minutes following a quick break from defence but Dean Holdsworth was stopped by a fine tackle by John Brown.

Gary Marshall who flitted in and out of the tested Benstead with a shot at the foot of the post by game, Brentford missed another opportunity as Scott Hiley cleared off the line (see photo) as Kevin Maloy failed to hold a corner from Keith Jones.

Bees skipper Terry Evans found himself with plenty of space but put his header shamefully wide but in the 6th minute of time added on by referee Bob Hamer Brentford doubled their lead. Gary Blissett seemed to be in an offside position when the ball was played by Kevin Godfrey, Maloy did extremely well to block his first shot but could not prevent the striker netting the rebound. City could think themselves unlucky o be two goals behind at this stage - typical of the current luck, or lack of it, that the side is having.

Shortly after the break Brentford almost put the match beyond The Grecians. Blissett had a good diving header which Maloy could only parry. skipper Evans headed against the bar when a goal seemed certain. Steve Moran reduced the arrears with his first goal at The Park after 67 minutes when Marshall played the ball from midfield. Moran escaped two defenders and although Benstead blocked his first effort he was able to score from a tight angle (see photo) after picking up the rebound.

Scott Hiley had a patch match on the right and Kevin Maloy lacked confidence in goal at times. On the positive side Moran did well without much support up front.
