EXETER CORNER ANOTHER TITLE
EXETER LADIES FC have rounded off the best season in the club's history by winning the Heavitree women's five-a-side football competition at Wingfield Park.
The team Brenda Frayne, Jackie Tancock, Mandy Langman, Julie Trott, Annie Hesketh, and substitute Caroline Ripping scored 25 goals in five games on their way to winning the tournament.
They finished top of their qualifying group by beating Pelynt B, Exeter Rangers A, and Bridge Club and went through to the semi-finals along with Pelynt A, Tiver- ton A, and Cardiff A. Tiverton beat Pelynt and Exeter beat Cardiff, the reigning All England five-a- side champions. In the final, Exeter and Tiverton were drawing 2-2 at the end of full time but the title went to Exeter because they had forced more corners.
The Heavitree success is added to the Women's Western League championship and the Western League Cup.
Exeter's captain Julie Costello was awarded the long-deserved player of the year award with Penny Wilson runner-up. The pair also shared the honours for individual match awards throughout the season.
Goalkeeper Brenda Frayne was voted most improved player and received a special award as the club's best fund raiser.
Julie Trott was Exeter's best trainer, attending 43 of the 44 sessions through the season, and for the fourth year running Sarah Boyce was acclaimed clubperson of the year for her unstinting work.
Exeter's Bridget Thomas had a sound debut for the South West regional side in their 1-0 win over the Midlands at Ottery St. Mary.
A fine season for us ended with a win over Frome by 5-1 in the League Cup we were also runners-Up in the Pat Sowden Cup losing out to Cardiff,and runners-up in the League by one point again to Cardiff. This was certainly Exeter's best season and everyone really enjoyed themselves with a fine team effort all round.
