Match 12
9th January 1983
WFA Cup 4th Round
Friends of Fulham (home)
"Friends" to visit Ladies
EXETER Ladies' FC have been drawn at home to London club Friends of Fulham in the fourth round of the Women's FA Cup.
That clash for a place in the quarter-finals of this national competition will be played at Wyvern Barracks on January 9.
Exeter were to have been in cup action tomorrow with a trip to Barry in the first round of the Women's Western League Cup, but the match has been called off because of a waterlogged pitch.
Girls in cup bid
Exeter Ladies FC face one of the most important games in the club's history tomorrow. They play Friends of Fulham at Wyvern Barracks (ko 2.0) for a place in the quarter-finals of the Women's FA Cup. Exeter have never gone further than the early regional- ised rounds before and this is their first time in the national draw.
They are enjoying one of their best seasons for some years and are currently unbeaten at the top of the Women's Western League. They have already beaten stiff opposition from Tiverton, Newport, and Illogan to qualify for the last 16 in the WFA Cup. Exeter will be at full strength for tomorrow's game against a London side who are an unknown quantity.
Exeter's biggest problem is a shortage of match practice. The weather has played havoc with their league programme and they have played just two matches in the last two months.
EXETER: B. Frayne, J. Tancock, T. Lake, M. Bowen, D. Turner, F. Crispin, J. Costello, A. Hesketh, J. Trott, B. Thomas, M. Langman. Subs (from) S. Trace, P. Wilson, S. Yelland.
Match Report
Ladies lose out
EXETER LADIES FC were beaten 6-1 in the fourth round of the Women's FA Cup by Friends of Fulham at Wyvern Barracks yester- day. Exeter had not played a match for five weeks and it showed as they failed to pro- duce anything like their best form in front of their largest crowd for years. Fulham', with a Welsh international striker spearheading their forward line, attacked strongly from the start, and were two goals up before Exeter could settle at all. Exeter had their best spell just before half-time. They pulled the scores back to 2-1 through Annie Hesketh, and were unlucky not to get another when Julie Costello hit the crossbar with a well- flighted free kick from 25 yards. They could not regain the momentum after the break and were guilty of some glar- ing misses and poor passing which allowed Fulham to regain control to devastating effect. Their well-oiled attack gave Exeter a real pounding with four second half goals to send them into the quar- ter-finals.
