Match 25
17th April 1983
Cardiff (home)
Annie misses a vital clash
EXETER LADIES' FC are without star striker Annie Hesketh for tomorrow's vital Women's Western League clash with Cardiff at Wyvern Barracks (3.0).
She has been called into the England squad and spends her first training weekend with the national outfit at Lilleshall today and tomorrow. Exeter bring in Penny Wilson to replace her in a game that will decide the league championship. Cardiff must win to retain any hope of toppling Exeter. A draw would probably be enough for Exeter who have far and away the best goal- scoring record in the league. They have already beaten Cardiff twice away from home in the past month but with everything to play for tomorrow's match promises to be far from easy for Exeter.
Exeter LFC: B. Frayne, J. Tancock, T. Lake, F. Crispin, M. Bowen, J. Costello, M. Langman, DTurner, J. Trott, B. Thomas, P. Wilson. Subs.: SYelland, S. Trace.
LADIES MISS OUT ON TITLE
EXETER LADIES FC have thrown away their chance of their first women's Western League title by losing 2-1 at home to Cardiff yesterday.
They came within four minutes of a draw that would probably have been enough to clinch the title but the overworked defence was cracked by the pacey Cardiff attack in the dying stages.
Cardiff still have three games to play but they are against sides they have beaten comfortably already this season and they have only to keep their heads to take the title.
They went ahead early on against Exeter, who strug- gled to find any of the rhythm that disturbed Car- diff in their two previous wins over the Welsh side this season.
Bridget Thomas equalised with a fine shot early in the second half but there wasn't much else to trouble the Cardiff goalkeeper.
