City Turns Professional (1908)
In 1908, Exeter City embraced professionalism, following election into the Southern League.
After hiring a player coach in December 1907 to organise the team, steps were taken to register City as a limited liability company. In the years that followed, Exeter's reputation began to flourish after dominating the East Devon League and holding their own in the Plymouth and District League. Election into the prestigious Southern League soon became the reward for City's previous campaigns, and on 14th October 1908, Exeter faced Southampton in their first match in the new league.
The 1908/09 season saw Exeter City turn professional after years of preparation and high-quality performance.
