The Redevelopment of St James Park (2000-2001)
St James Park has always been renowned for providing fans with a cocktail of atmosphere. The ground blends together traditional and modern stands which taps into fans' nostalgia alongside younger perceptions of the modern game.
When club finances began to improve in the late 90s, the decision was made to redevelop the Big Bank and Cowshed stands in St James Park.
Beginning with the opening of the Thatcher's Big Bank in February 2000, the famous atmosphere of St James Park was reinforced as the new stand became the largest standing terrace in the country, with a capacity of 3,971. Then, in 2001, the Cowshed stand was redeveloped into what is now known at the WTS stand, housing a maximum of 2,116 seated home and away fans. The redevelopment of 2000/2001 updated St James Park while allowing the ground to retain its unique nostalgic environment.
The precedent set by the redevelopment of the Big Bank and the Cowshed continues today as recently acquired Heritage Lottery Funding began proceedings for the redevelopment of the Old Grandstand after ninety years of its service to Exeter City.
