GAME TO FORGET

EXETER v PLYMOUTH
(5th October 1980)

On Sunday 5th October 1980 Exeter Ladies entertained Plymouth Pilgrims in the first round of the W.F.A.Cup here at Wyvern Barracks. Exeter's spirits were riding high after an impressive 4-1 over Newport, but they failed to produce anything like the form that saw them run out comfortable winners over the Welsh.

Plymouth always manage to raise their game against Exeter and this match was no exception. Despite dissapointing results in their first season in the new South Western league, the Pilgrims were determined to maintain their record in this competition which saw them quarter-finalist two seasons ago. Against the run of play Plymouth took a first half lead when a mix-up between defence and goalkeeper allowed their forward to nip in and score. The home side kept battling and were rewarded when BRIDGET THOMAS equalised. In the 2nd half Exeter still failed to build their attacks with any real thought and the forwards proved ineffective against a tough Plymouth defence, packed with experienced players. From facing defeat, Plymouth snatched victory when, from a lofted corner, the ball slipped out of keeper Brenda Frayne's hands and the ball was stabbed home from the goal line.
