Former England goalkeeper Peter Shilton celebrated his second anniversary as manager of Plymouth Argyle by laying the St James Park hoodoo. In a pulsating derby, which was the forty-fifth League meeting of the old rivals, the Pilgrims climbed to second place in the table by winning their first League match at the ground since 1928, and simultaneously plunged the Grecians into deep relegation trouble.
During the first half, underdogs Exeter looked capable of upsetting the form book and maintaining their proud sixty-six-year home record against a tentative Plymouth team. The better football came from the home side, and they gave the Argyle defence an early scare when Nicky Morgan out-jumped marker Andy Comyn to head a Mark Gavin cross against the crossbar. Following a period of sustained pressure, City deservedly took the lead on the half-hour. Jason Minett's volley was deflected by Keith Hill into the path of Mark Cooper. The midfielder let fly and tucked away a low shot past 'keeper Alan Nichols, who had just been selected for the England Under 21 squad.

Argyle came out fighting in the second half and transformed the match by snatching two quick goals to overtake City within seven minutes of the restart. They levelled when Mark Patterson charged into the box and, as 'keeper Peter Fox rushed out to block him, the full-back hit a low cross which covering defender Mark Gavin unluckily deflected into his own net. The home side were then left reeling when Mickey Evans broke free on the left and cut the ball back perfectly for Wayne Burnett to side-foot Argyle into the lead. In a vain attempt to turn the tide, City boss Terry Cooper brought on Jon Brown for Mickey Ross and pushed former Pilgrim Robbie Turner forward. This did not prevent a rampant Argyle side from increasing their lead in the seventy-sixth minute with the best goal of the game. From a throw-in on the right, Kevin Nugent turned his marker and the striker's low cross to the near post was hammered into the roof of the net from close range by Mickey Evans. Exeter substitute David Adekola replaced Nicky Morgan and pulled one back when Turner and Cooper combined to lay the ball off to the Nigerian international, who drove past Alan Nichols.
