Biographical Text

A team mate at Bradford Park Avenue of Exeter City’s John Batten, Farnk Lowson started his career with a one season stay at his home town club, Forfar Athletic.

He then transferred to Dundee, but his stay was a short one, just three months, before he moved to Bradford Park Avenue. Whilst there he played for the Yorkshire League against the Irish League at Cliftonville, he appeared in 12 Football League matches for Park Avenue, netting two goals.

Signing for Exeter City he made his debut against Portsmouth at St James’ park in September 1923. But he spent most of his stay at City in the reserve team, appearing in only four Third Division South matches.

On leaving Exeter, Lowson signed for Barrow for the 1924-25 season and featured in 25 Third Division North games, scoring two goals.

Frank died in 1969.

James Cotton:

I run a photo library website called Vintage Footballers. I have an image of F. Lowson of Lincoln City, taken c.1922, I'm just loading to a web page, you can see the card under the Lincoln page of the Pinnace website, card no 2411, https://pinnacecards.wordpress.com/lincoln-city/

Problem is that I have Frank Lowson's playing record and there's no evidence he ever went to Lincoln City. He was at Bradford PA and played his last game on Boxing Day 1922, then went to Exeter in August 1923.

Two questions arise: 1) Is the player in the Lincoln shirt no 2411 actually Frank Lowson or someone else? It could simply be a naming mistake. Would you have a comparison photo from a 23-24 Exeter team group? There's no doubt he's wearing a Lincoln City shirt identical to the several players all of whom played numerous games for Lincoln in 1922-23. 2) If it is Lowson, then the only explanation (and it's a tough one) is that either in January 1922 (he didn't play for Bradford PA between Dec 21 and Sept 22) he joined Lincoln (on loan?) before returning, or in January 1923 or round there he joined Lincoln, got photographed by Pinnace, but never made a first team appearance between January and August when he joined Exeter. Slightly tough to believe they'd photograph the players mid season and not pre season. I know he didn't play for Lincoln after looking at the roster of players on ENFA website but that doesn't mean he wasn't at Lincoln at some point.

Add to that there's a Yorkshire cricketer of the 1950s called Frank Lowson and it all gets a bit confusing. Can you shed any light??
