For the second time this season it was time to return to Nene Park. Disappointment early on came up in hospitality. They had replaced the waiter service for self service, although the food was still top notch! After loitering above the tunnel, and making players wave at us (notably Rushdens Jon Challinor!) we headed off for the lengthy walk around to the away end.
Once inside we settled on the same spot as the last game in which to sit and Grecian was left on the wall. We went in at half time 1-0 up thanks to an Adam Stansfield goal. We should have had a chance to double the lead from the penalty spot but the referee, as is always too often, failed to notice a Rushden handball. City pushed on in the second half and created chance after chance. Then finally, Harley scored from 10 yards to spark pandemonium in the 359 strong away end. The rest of the game was played out with ease. City were cheered down to the away end at the final whistle by a set of fans who were all too aware that we were edging ever closer to the play-offs.
The long walk to the bus, was for once, a joyous one. Much like Halifax, the Rushden curse that had spawned an 'impressive' 4 defeats in 4 had come to an end. The home fans were moaning as we passed them. I was positively skipping! As always it took ages to get away from Nene Park but unsurprisingly we didn't mind. With the end of the season rapidly approaching, and with our good form and position, it may transpire that we may not be playing at Nene Park again for a while. Fingers crossed!
