Back at Wembley: Promotion to the Football league (2008)
The season after reaching the play-off final at Wembley against Morecambe, City found themselves in exactly the same position facing Cambridge for promotion back into the Football League after years of success in the conference.
The 2007/08 season saw Exeter City place 4th on the table with 83 points with only seven losses, which was joint lowest with champions Aldershot Town.
Rob Edwards was the sole goal-scorer for City in their narrow 1-0 victory, ending a five-year absence from the Football League when his head met Dean Moxey’s beautifully placed corner on the 21st minute. During the first-half, Exeter dominated possession which set the tone for most of the game. Cambridge was successfully kept at bay until a couple of fierce shots in the dying moments of the clash at Wembley, before the clock struck and City could confidently celebrate their promotion back into to League Two.
The passionate win against Cambridge at Wembley in 2008 was only the beginning of the successes that Paul Tisdale’s City team would begin to enjoy. The return to League Two for the 2008/09 Season would end up in yet another massive achievement for the Grecians, seeing them achieve back to back promotions.
