Football League Cup (Worthington Cup)
Brighton (away)
Brighton 2-1 Exeter
(aet)
Danny Cullip scored an extra-time winner to give Brighton a place in the second round of the Worthington Cup with victory against Exeter.
Exeter produced an excellent defensive performance at the Withdean Stadium and it was no surprise when the Grecians took the lead after five minutes courtesy of a Barry McConnell penalty.
Justin Walker was hauled down in the area by Guy Butters and McConnell made no mistake with from the spot with a cool finish.
However, the Seagulls battled back gamely and dragged themselves back into the contest when teenager Shaun Wilkinson scored his first goal for Brighton after 33 minutes.
He struck with a tremendous 25-yard strike that left Exeter goalkeeper Kevin Miller with no chance.
After the break, an unyielding Exeter rearguard continued to frustrate the home side as the game went into extra time.
But Brighton dominated proceedings and finally found a way past the Grecians defence after 103 minutes when Cullip latched on to a fine Charlie Oatway free-kick and made no mistake with a fine close-range header.
