Stevenage played out a drab goalless draw with Exeter in their first ever game in the third tier.
The hosts had the only real chance in a poor first half, but Scott Laird saw his long-range strike saved by Grecians keeper Artur Krysiak.
Craig Reid forced a smart save from Krysiak in the second half.
James Dunne could have won the game for the visitors but he fired straight at Alan Julian as both sides seemed happy to settle for a point.
VIEWS FROM THE DRESSING ROOM
Exeter City manager Paul Tisdale on Nicholas Bignall being brought down by Stevenage's John Ashton:
"I can't tell you what the referee was thinking.
"It appeared to be a case of a suspect challenge from where we were.
"If he [the referee] thought it was a very suspect challenge, it'd have to be a red card and he didn't give it, but you'll have to ask him."
