Extra-time in Cup-tie battle to meet Spurs - Swansea win late reward

By REGINALD PELLING

Swansea 4 Exeter 2
(After extra time)

SWANSEA earned a second-round League Cup-tie against Tottenham at White Hart Lane after almost two hours of frustration last night. They hammered Fourth Division Exeter from the start of the first-round replay at Vetch Field but it took extra time before they could shake their rivals off. Exeter made such a shaky start that they almost conceded a goal and had one of their players booked inside the first couple of minutes.

Swansea's nippy winger Evans figured in both incidents. He dispossessed Rowan outside the penalty box and was just re- covering his balance when Wilson dashed out of his goal to scramble the ball away. Back came Evans with another thrust and this time he was promptly brought down by Parker, who had his name taken by referee Harry New of Bristol. After five minutes Swansea scored the goal that they promised. Gwyther headed the ball forward and Hole raced through to chip it over the onrushing Wilson into an empty net.

Cotton ought to have made it two for Swansea when Allchurch sent him through and again Exeter had reason to thank Wilson's alertness. Swansea created several other wasted by poor shooting and Exeter began to get into the game. Williams, Swansea's captain, was booked by referee New for a foul on Rowan, who was making his debut in Exeter's colours. Then Rowan "constructed Exeter's equaliser. He took a prodigious throw-in from the touch-line which Gadston squeezed just inside the near post. Johnny Corr, operating on Exeter's left wing in a reshuffled forward line caused by injury to Alan Banks, made a great run soon after half-time in which he sped past four defenders. But he spoiled his elfort by shooting wide. Exeter had cause to regret his miss within minutes as Gwyther headed Swansea into the lead again from an Allchurch corner. This just made Exeter fight all the harder and there were lengthy spells when Swansea had to pull almost all their players back in defence. Five minutes from the end of normal time Mitton kept Exeter hopes alive when he hit a second equaliser after Rowan's header had bounced on the crossbar and Slee had blocked a close-range shot from Gadston. Gwyther, in the 17th minute of extra time, and Allchurch. in the 21st, scored the goals that finally ended Exeter's resis tance and took Swansea to White Hart Lane.
