Match 02
18th August 1970
Football League Cup R1
Swansea (h)

TUESDAY 18th AUGUST 1970.

EVERYTHING BUT SCORE.

FOOTBALL LEAGUE CUP ROUND ONE.

No, Swansea, this just isn't good enough

SWANSEA CITY'S much-changed team earned a replay against Exeter City at St. James' Park last night but manager Roy Bentley could hardly be pleased with their Football League Cup first round performance. Swansea grabbed a goal-less draw but not by any stretch of the imagination could those changes Bentley made be hailed as a complete success. No doubt he is happy enough to have made Exeter travel for a replay next Tuesday when the odds must be in Swansea's favour. It was virtually all one-way traffic, and at times the Swansea goalmouth was as jammed as the notorious Exeter by-pass. Exeter, particularly in the second half. laid seige to the Swansea goal but nothing they did brought them the goal they needed. The Swansea defence, over-worked and continually under pressure, withstood all Exeter's barnstorming approach and with goalkeeper Tony Millington in tremendous form, they foiled Exeter each and every time. It was up front that Swansea looked so unimpressive. Their raids were few and far between and their approach work had no edge of danger. In neither half did Exeter goalkeeper Bob Wilson. the former Cardiff player, look at all worried. There were really only two occasions when Swansea looked as if they might score Both came ironically in the second half when Exeter were so much in command. One was a half chance when a deflection came to Barrie Hole out on the left. But the angle was difficult and he had to take it quickly.

The second arose from free kick on the right When the ball was crossed. the Exeter defence were caught in two minds and Geoff Thomas moved forward to head just over the top. Otherwise, it was virtually the same story all the way through Exeter going for ward, but failing to finish in front of a packed Swansea goal. The turning point probably came just after the start of the second half when Millington did well to smother a John Mitten shot low down. Perhaps it was not to be Exeter's night but they really had only themselves to blame. They let Swansea off the hook by not finding the torget on a number of occasions. Swansea hung on, aided by a little luck at times, and in addition to wiping out the memory of that 6-0 defeat at Exeter last season, they got the result they were after. It seemed pretty apparent throughout that all Swansea came for was a draw. Although they succeeded. Bentley cannot be a very happy man.
