What better way to kick off the season than an away win over local rivals Plymouth Argyle? The Home Park side were in the Second Division at the time and, on paper, it looked a tough tie for Fourth Division City. However, a fine team performance produced a shock result that was fully merited on the day. Newly signed striker Tony Kellow was the man who scored the vital goal on 21 minutes. However, his overall performance did much to please the travelling Exeter fans - as well as his finishing he looked to have plenty of skill and an ability to hold the ball up. The victory was oh so sweet for the three former Plymouth players in the City ranks - Bobby Saxton, Nicky Jennings and John Hore all did well against their previous employer.
