City completed the job they started on Saturday with a 1-0 second leg win over Argyle at the Park. The 2:0 aggregate win over a team from two Leagues above them was a fine achievement. A first half goal by Mike Jordan put City in command and they never really looked like losing the tie after that. The start of the second half was delayed for a few minutes as police dealt with rival fans fighting in the ground. The victory secured place in the potentially lucrative Second Round stage when the "big guns" enter the competition. City fans heading home afterwards were talking confidently about the season ahead. Argyle fans, on the other hand, knew they were in for a tough season which would ultimately end in relegation.
NEWMAN: "DON'T SPOIL IT IN THE COOKING."
Exeter City manager John Newman is optimistic for a good season and has been impresssed by the team performances so far.
"The atmosphere at the club, as we enter the long season, is electric," he said. "The entire attitude at St James' Park has to be positive and progressive. I trust the enthusiasm will rub off on the supporters, for I am overwhelmed by your desire to be connected with a professional football club."
"The players have worked hard in pre-season training and I have been encouraged by the performances, especially the team performance at Plymouth Argyle on Saturday last, but the job now has to be finished. The ingredients have been prepared, the cake is looking good, but we must not spoil it in the cooking. The attitude of my players and myself is that we will not talk about losing throughout the season. Success is winning matches and I want the supporters to feel the same way."
"We are on the road. The race is on. Together we must drive to reach the chequered flag."
