21st August 1976
Hartlepool United (a)
SATURDAY 21st AUGUST 1976
KELLOW GOALS EARN CITY A POINT
Fourth Division
Hartlepool United 2 Exeter City 2
Hartlepool United: Richardson, Goad, Maggiore, Veitch, Scott, O'Donnell, Elliott, Spelman, Endean, Scaife,
Bielby
Exeter City: Key, Templeman, Hooker, Hore, Saxton, Hatch, Hodge, Kellow, Clapham, Beer, Jordan. Scorers: Hartlepool: Endean, Elliott. Exeter City: Kellow (2).
Attendance: 1,602
Tony Kellow came to Exeter City's rescue at Hartlepool with two goals that brought home a point. But it was not a result that City really deserved. Exeter were ragged and untidy, and in the second half in particular, gave away the ball far too often.
Right from the start City found themselves up against it conceding three corners in the first six minutes, and Richard Key had to make a desperate dash off his line to thwart Scaife. The City attack were rarely in the picture up until the 23rd minute when they shocked Hartlepool by taking the lead through a freak goal.
A Hartlepool clearance struck Kellow who was only three-yards out and the ball rebounded into the net. This sparked off a renewed challenge from the home side who deservedly equalised in the 40th minute, Endean nodding home a cross from the ever dangerous Bielby.
