Exeter were left in the cold in a disastrous first 30 minutes at The Old Showground as Scunthorpe United established a three-gual lead. The Grecians were at sixes and sevens, being pulled apart by the combined efforts of Kimore and Lumby City found themselves a goal down after just 6 minutes. Money's free-kick was chipped over John Baugh's head by lamby

St. Lukes College student, and debutant Baugh was beaten again in the 21st minute when Cruceman's shot gave him no chance of saving. Two minutes later it g en worse. John Hore's back pass sailed over the head of Baugh who was yants of his line for an can goal

Nicky Jennings was the one Exeter player to trouble Scunthorpe and he pulled a goal back with a cross shot in the 34th minute, as one wondered whether City would turn the game in the second half. It was the hosts tum to face the full force of a gale force wind and driving rain, but they never allowed the Grecians a chance of getting back into the game.

Certainly Exeter were far more in the game, but it was all over when Lumby scored his second goal, neatly deflecting a through pass from Czuczman. City's promotion prospects have now been dampened by two successive away defeats and much of their failure was due to to their own schoolboy defensive shortcomings, and inability to control the middle of the field.
