The Grecians at Wembley (2007)
After placing 5th in the Blue Square Premier, Exeter clinched a position in the play-offs and managed to reach the final against Morecambe at Wembley.
The 2006/07 season drew to a close with City earning 78 points from 46 matches played. The success throughout the season drew substantial praise from Grecians everywhere, and the play-off final on the 20th May 2007 drew an attendance of 40,043 spectators to Wembley, which was the highest turnout for a Conference play-off final at the time. Of that remarkable figure, an estimated 30,000 Exeter fans journeyed to north-west London for the match.
Most national reporters witnessed a thrilling match, filled with key moments, highlights and end-to-end battles. Despite an early headed goal from City’s Lee Phillips on the 7th minute, Garry Thompson and Danny Carlton’s goals led Morecambe to beat City 2-1 by the final whistle. City had to leave the national stadium empty handed, but the Grecians would only have to wait until the next season for glory with a win against Cambridge in the 2008 play-off final that meant City would join Morecambe in League Two.
