Alan Beer has a happy habit of scoring against Scunthorpe United. He netted a hat-trick against them last April, and he has now added a further two goals that gave Exeter City a well deserved victory.

It had been a question of patience for City. They knew Scunthorpe were not going to be an easy outfit to beat. The Grecians had to keep running and working and this is what they did. Had it not been for the visitors keeper, Glan Letheren, they would have won more comfortably.

The all important breakthrough came in the 17th minute. A cross from Bobby Hodge went through the Scunthorpe defence to Nicky Jennings out on the left. He knocked the ball back in and Beer beat Letheren with a fine glancing, but powerful, header that gave the keeper no chance. Exeter made the game safe in the 75th minute when Tony Kellow flicked the ball on. Clive Wiggington made a defensive mistake as he tried a back header, and Beer immediately pounced for a well taken chance.
