Exeter City's defeat at Southend United was the third successive match in which they have failed to score. The current injury problems at the club are obviously not helping matters. City though, in truth, never looked like scoring, and the Southend keeper, Neil Freeman, did not have a direct attempt to save all game.

Exeter produced some promising build up work, but it never led to anything against a home side that seemed to be well contained in the first half. The opening goal for Southend came in the 27th minute, at a time when the Grecians were concentrating on possession football. It was Southend's first real attempt at goal, as Paul Denny scored.

City were still in the match at half-time and it became pretty clear that they were not going to get a goal. Southend wrapped the game up with a second goal in the 70th minute from Stuart Parker, and it was all over for the Grecians after that.
