Match 19
12th November 1976
Huddersfield (a)
FRIDAY 12th NOVEMBER 1976
BEST START IN TEN
Exeter City 2 Huddersfield Town 0
Exeter City team: Key, Hore, Hooker, Morrin, Darke, Hatch, Weeks, Kellow, Robertson, Holman, Jennings.
Huddersfield Town team: Poole, Hart, Oliver, Walker, Barnes, Hague, Gray, Campbell (Goldthorpe), Sidebottom, Fowler, Johnson.
Scorers: Exeter: Kellow, Robertson. Attendance: 3,657.
Exeter City's best start to the season in 10 years has put them just two points away from the top spot in the Fourth Division, as the promotion momentum grows. It was another enjoyable and entertaining game between two sides that bookmakers had made pre-season favourites for promotion.
It was a good, efficient Exeter team performance. Huddersfield, though, made it hard for City, playing some good determined football, but they never really clicked in front of goal. Exeter took the lead in the 35th minute following a hard cross from Alan Hooker, and Tony Kellow struck a fine shot into the net for his 10th goal of the season.
The second City goal in the 55th minute developed from a quickly taken free-kick by the impressive Graham Weeks. He fed Nicky Jennings who hit an early cross for Lammie Robertson to rifle in another well struck goal. Exeter had run and battled for each other, and thoroughly deserved their win. A performance that, if reproduced throughout the season, will surely bring them a great deal of success.
