Match 08
22nd September 1984
Bury (home)
Exeter City v Bury
22/9/84
FT 0-2 (HT 0-1)
Attendance: 2883
This was a very disappointing result after three consecutive home wins. Bury, a reliable rather than a sensational team, just set about doing the basics and got the result they deserved. City showed none of their early season form, in fact they were totally out played, especially in the first half.
It was a very poor first half performance from City. They rarely entered the opposing penalty area and did not force a single save for the Bury keeper. Not that Bury created that many chances for themselves. They simply took control of the midfield and had City pinned back in their own half for 45 minutes. In the fortieth minute they got their just reward when WAYNE ENTWHISTLE scored from a free header at the far post.
There was a more spirited performance in the second half from City but they never managed to take control. The nearest they came to scoring was in the 57th minute when Ray Pratt hit the post. Soon after this City forced a goal-line clearance from the Bury defence, but hopes of late equaliser were dashed in the 37th minute when, after a good save from Jeff Wood in the City goal, WAYNE ENTWHISTLE forced in the rebound for his second goal. There was still time for Bury to force good saves from Jeff Wood before the final whistle relieved City of any more punishment!
