Match 10
3rd October 1984
Mansfield Town (home)

Exeter City v Mansfield

3/10/84

FT 0-0

Attendance: 2097

There was the lowest attendance of the season to see a terrible match. There were two very average sides on show and very little, if any. entertainment was produced to warm the evening air.

It was the visitors who did the attacking in the first half. After only two minutes, 4 Mansfield free-kick was curled, and tipped over well by Jeff Wood, the only City player to have a good game. Mansfield were forced to make substitution a early as the twelth minute, when Dave Caldwell was replaced by Mike Galloway. but this did not do City any good at all. Jeff Wood was forced to make another save in the 27th minute, but there was no more happening in the visitors' penalty area than there had been against Bury.

Apart from a string of five corners early in the half, Mansfield looked just as ordinary as City had done in the first half and continued to do in the second forty-five minutes. If this gives a bleak picture, then it is not a false impression. At half time Steve Harrower replaced Martin Ling, who seemed to be very tired. But City still lacked any height and any sense of direction. The final whistle signalled incredible 335 minutes of an football without a goal for the City attackers.
