A Gary Madine brace helped Sheffield Wednesday hammer Exeter to record a fifth straight home win.

James O'Connor poked home his first of the season to give the Owls the advantage just before the break.

Madine then doubled the lead, heading in Ben Marshall's cross before grabbing his second from the penalty spot after he had been fouled by Danny Coles.

Sheffield Wednesday manager Gary Megson told BBC Radio Sheffield:

"I thought that was our best performance at home.

"Eventually the penny dropped, we started passing, getting the ball wide and once we got the first goal maybe Exeter's plan went out the window.

"Gary Madine has got a natural eye for the goal. He's got a talent for getting hold of the ball and he's now working a lot harder than he was, both in training and off the pitch, and he's getting his rewards for it."

Exeter City manager Paul Tisdale told BBC Radio Devon:

"Everything we know we're good at, we were good at today for 40 minutes. But we showed what we have to improve on as well.

"There's a fine line between a team where the players are driving forward on the fringe of confidence and them suddenly becoming confident.

"I can only do so much, I can only get that team on the field to start that way."

Shep The Saint For Reserves

Chris Shephard netted twice for Exeter City Reserves as they lost 4-3 in a friendly at Southampton on Tuesday.

The Grecians took the lead when they pressed the Saints backline and forced them into an under hit pass which Tom Nichols latched on to and tucked past Saints keeper Jack Dovey. In an end-to-end encounter it was the home side who drew level on 17 minutes before Sam McQueen headed past Lenny Pidgeley on 36 minutes to make it 2-1.

Just before the interval Shephard fired home a fine left-footed free-kick to make it 2-2. And after falling behind again City's number 14 scored another stylish equaliser to level it up again after a top-class assist from Nichols.

Harlee Dean's far post finish on 71 minutes meant Southampton came away with the win but it was a great work out the Reserves.

"It was the sort of game you are looking for when you arrange fixtures like this one," Development coach Andy Tillson said. "A good game of football against a strong line-up."

"We caused them problems throughout, especially going forward, and it was great for Guillem to get 90 minutes and Tom looked very sharp in the final third as well."
