Duke, John (James)

Biographical Text

John (James) Duke made his Football League debut with Grimsby Town, whom he played for in the 1919-20 and 1920-21 seasons, although he only appeared on six occasions.

He then moved to neighbours Scunthorpe & Lindsey United, who were members of the Midland League.

However, he did get the opportunity to join another Football League team when signing for Bristol City in the summer of 1922. His stay at Ashton Gate was a short one though and he quickly moved on to Exeter in December 1922.

He made his debut for Exeter playing for the reserves in a 7-0 defeat at Plymouth in the Southern League on the 26th of December 1922.

After a successful one-month trial he was given a contract, making his one and only appearance for the first team in a 3-1 defeat at Merthyr Town in a Southern League fixture.
